The mother of former Sen. Alfonse D’Amato died Thursday at age 99 at her home in Island Park, N.Y. Antoinette D’Amato was credited by her son, NY’s last Republican senator, for getting him elected in 1980. She appeared in a commercial carrying a bag of groceries and complaining about inflation, urging viewers to “vote for my son Al.”
