88th Yahrtzeit of Harav Hillel Klein to be Marked

BROOKLYN

This Sunday will mark the 88th yahrtzeit of Harav Hillel Hakohen Klein, zt”l. Many will be visiting his kever at Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn to commemorate the yahrtzeit. On Sunday, there will be extended hours for men only to visit the kever at Washington Cemetery from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Tuesday, April 8, there will be hours for women, also 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (The cemetery normally closes at 3:15.)

Rabbi Klein stemmed from Hungary, where he was a talmid of the Ksav Sofer in the Pressburger Yeshivah. Later he was a maggid shiur in the yeshivah of Harav Ezriel Hildesheimer in Eisenstadt and served as a Rav in the town of Libau, Latvia. After his arrival in the United States in 1890, he was appointed a Dayan on the beis din of Harav Yaakov Joseph, Chief Rabbi of New York. He served as Rav of Congregation Ohev Tzedek on the Lower East Side for close to 40 years and was one of the most influential Rabbanim of his time.

Rav Klein passed away on 6 Nissan 5686/1926. Ironically, Rebbetzin Klein, a granddaughter of Harav Samson Raphael Hirsch, zt”l, was niftar two days later, unaware of her husband’s petirah. She is buried next to him.

The kevarim of Rav Klein and his wife are located in cemetery 1 of Washington Cemetery at Hyacinth and Lotus Avenues, marker 96. To reach the gravesite, walk into the Ocean Parkway entrance, located between Avenues J and K, turn left onto the walkway and right onto Lotus.
