Plan Approved to Rebuild Tiferes Yisrael Synagogue in Old City
The Yerushalayim Municipality has approved plans to rebuild the historic Tiferes Yisrael Synagogue in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City.
The magnificent three-story domed structure was inaugurated in 1872 in memory of the Ruzhiner Rebbe, zy”a, and became a focal point of spiritual and communal life in the holy city.
It was destroyed by the Jordanian Army after it captured the Old City during Israel’s 1948 War of Independence. The shul is currently in ruins, with only one wall remaining.
The rebuilding will recreate the original structure, including the famed dome, with only minor changes, such as installation of an elevator for public convenience.
“The municipality sees great importance in preserving and rebuilding Jerusalem’s heritage sites. The Tiferet Yisrael synagogue was a symbol of the Jewish Yishuv and we are proud to bring it back and rebuild it anew,” said Mayor Nir Barkat in a statement.
