Lawmaker Wants to Raise NJ’s Famed Low Gas Tax

TRENTON, N.J.

The chairman of the state Senate’s Budget Committee says New Jersey should increase the gas tax to fund its transportation infrastructure needs, The Associated Press reported. Sen. Paul Sarlo, a Democrat, criticized Gov. Chris Christie’s administration for failing to follow its own pay-go transportation plan. “All we’ve done is borrow, borrow, borrow,” Sarlo said before Tuesday’s hearing on Christie’s proposed budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1.
