Egyptian Officials Accused of Lulav Trafficking
Five Egyptian agriculture officials were charged with illegally exporting 15 tons of lulavim to Israel, Haaretz reported, quoting the Egyptian Daily News on Monday.
The officials are charged with mislabeling the product in order to ship them to Israeli importers in Israel and New York City.
Egypt’s Agriculture Ministry first banned the export of palm fronds to Israel in 2011, claiming growing concerns about overharvesting and the need to preserve the national treasure.
Israel was importing about 700,000 palm fronds a year prior for Sukkos. However, since the ban it has been increasing domestic production, which last year made up for the shortfall.
