WWII Veteran From Upstate NY Gets Purple Heart
An WWII veteran who survived a plane crash over France seven decades ago finally received his Purple Heart, The Associated Press reported. Richard Faulkner, 89, of Auburn received the award Saturday afternoon from Rep. Dan Maffei for wounds received on March 18, 1944, when the 19-year-old crashed his B-17 bomber while en route to Germany. The B-17 was sliced in two and everyone died but Faulker, who parachuted to safety. He initially declined the medal because he was so devastated by the tragedy.
