NY Officials: Nine in 10 Register for STAR Tax Rebate
About nine in 10 New York homeowners eligible for the STAR property tax rebate have registered to maintain the benefit, state officials said Monday. New York last year required homeowners to re-register for the local school tax breaks because of reports of widespread abuse and fraud. Some 2.4 million households out of 2.7 million have done so. The tax department is still accepting late registrations, but tax officials will begin notifying local assessors to remove exemptions on March 7. Homeowners can appeal until the end of the year.
