U.S. Eyes Difficulties in Next Round of Iran Talks

For the United States and its negotiating partners, the next round of nuclear talks with Iran could present a difficult decision: Sign another temporary agreement or accept nothing less than an ambitious, multiyear accord to dismantle the Islamic republic’s nuclear program?

To some critics, anything short of a full agreement may be seen as a stalling tactic by the Iranians, potentially allowing them to reap billions of dollars in eased sanctions while refining their nuclear technology. It could also make it harder for President Barack Obama to hold off a congressional push for tougher sanctions.

But as the parties prepare to resume face-to-face negotiations in February, Iran analysts say a short-term deal may be the only feasible outcome given the vast differences between Tehran and the international coalition.
