Yom Tefillah Declared for Wednesday

Wednesday, Erev Rosh Chodesh Shevat, which is when Moshe Rabbeinu began his final review of the Torah with the Jewish people, the Jewish communities of Eretz Yisrael and the Diaspora will join in fervent prayer to our Father in Heaven.

This is in response to the ominous threats of the secular Israeli government against our religious institutions, talmidei  Torah and the Torah way of life.  The Gedolim have declared this day as a Yom Tefillah.

In every community, the Jews will stand as one, calling out to Heaven with all their might for protection from the hands of those who wish to harm us and uproot the chareidi way of life from Eretz Yisrael.

The Israeli government has been passing laws that will cause grave harm to the Jewish nation. They have already imposed unprecedented economic hardships on Torah institutions and on young, growing families, and they plan to forcibly induct yeshivah students to serve in the IDF.

The entire Jewish nation is gravely concerned over these developments and the attempts to stifle Torah growth in Haaretz Hakadoshah. All Yidden, wherever they may be, must be inspired to stand in fervent prayer to our Creator, asking Him to come to the aid of His servants and save them from harm.

All community leaders and shul officers throughout Eretz Yisrael and the Diaspora have been asked to organize communal prayers on this date. Each community is asked to conduct the tefillos, Tehillim and selichos in their own tradition, pleading with Hashem to inspire the Israeli government leaders to reconsider and back down from their anti-Torah plans.

The Gedolim in Eretz Yisrael, including Hageonim, shlita, Posek hador Harav Shmuel Halevi Wosner, Harav Aharon Leib Steinman, Harav Shmuel Auerbach, and the members of Badatz Kahal Machazikei Hadas, have called for this day of prayer because at present the Israeli government is in the process of persecuting Torah institutions and religious practices in every possible way.

The Gedolim have pointed out that at this very time, the Jews of Eretz Yisrael are threatened on all sides by aggressive forces who have stated their aim of destroying all Jewish communities in the land. This threat is aggravated by the government’s moves within the land’s borders to stop yungeleit from their devotion to Torah study and prevent Jewish children from receiving a pure, unadulterated Torah education. These are the very things, however, that can provide us protection from our external enemies and guarantee our survival.

Wherever Jews are, please set aside this day for prayers, Tehillim and selichos, asking Hashem to change the minds of the Israeli officials. Hashem will certainly not ignore the united prayers of His entire nation.

Ken yehi Ratzon.
