Jobless Benefits Run Out For 127K NYers
More than 127,000 New Yorkers were cut off when federal emergency jobless benefits ended Saturday; while in New Jersey, 90,000 people lost out, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Nationally about 1.3 million people lost their extended benefits. Senate Democrats promised a vote by Jan. 7 to extend benefits by three months, but House Republicans oppose a renewal. The emergency program, in place since 2008, gives federally paid benefits to jobless people after their 26 weeks of state benefits run out during time of high unemployment.
