De Blasio Throwing Weight in Speaker’s Race: Report

NEW YORK

Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio is making phonecalls to get the city council’s 51 legislators to support his candidate for speaker, Melissa Mark-Viverito, according to a NY1 report. Mark-Viverito, a co-founder of the council’s Progressive Caucus, was the first member of the Council to endorse de Blasio’s bid for mayor. She is seen as a front-runner in the race but many observers believed she would only be able to pull off a win with de Blasio’s backing. The Council will elect its new speaker in January.
