DA Charges Woman Who Conned Elderly as Hate Crime

BAY SHORE, N.Y. (AP) -

In a first, a Long Island woman accused of conning at least two elderly men out of half a million dollars in cash and vehicles was charged with grand larceny as a hate crime. Suffolk County Thomas Spota says it’s the first time his office has alleged age as the basis for a hate crime. Lisa Ferkovich’s lawyer claims the alleged victims were cognizant of what was happening and there was no coercion.
