Hundreds Demonstrate in Front of Prison Where Yeshivah Bachur Is Being Held

Harav Shmuel Auerbach, shlita, along with hundreds of others,  demonstrated Wednesday in front of Prison 6, near Atlil at the Oren Junction,  demanding that the persecution of lomdei Torah in Eretz Yisrael stop. The demonstration was in response to the arrest and imprisonment for 14 days of a talmid from Yeshivas Nachalas Asher in Petach Tivka, who was accused of draft evasion and desertion.

Harav Auerbach made the trip from Yerushalayim to attend the demonstration, and also visited with the bachur to give him support. Hundreds of avreichim filled the prison, waving signs stating “Stop the Religious Persecution.”

On Sunday, at three o’clock in the morning, the military police raided the bachur’s home in Kiryat Malachi and handcuffed him in front of his family.

The bachur was then brought before a judge, who sentenced him to 14 days in prison at Prison 6 for deserting the army and evading the draft.

The bachur is a yeshivah student who received a draft order even before the Tal Law expired, at which time he came to the recruitment office and declared that his status was that of “Toraso umnaso.”

The Rosh Yeshivah of the yeshivah where the boy learns, Harav Moshe Pinto, said, “This bachur is one of our most special boys. They took the best of them, and it’s a nisayon that we must all stand up to.”
