Funding Approved for Queens Waterfront Project

ALBANY (AP) —

The federal government has approved funding to start a $50 million flood-mitigation project to better protect Howard Beach against storm surges. The project would reshape 150 acres into a planned excavation, with imported sand and added vegetation, which would establish a system of salt marshes, dunes, grasslands and maritime forests at increasing levels.
