Interpreter Makes Candid Comment on U.N. Bias

The Spanish-English translator pauses in her simultaneous translation to make a candid comment on the U.N. obsession with Israel:

“I mean, I think when you have five statements — not five, like a total of 10 resolutions on Israel and Palestine — there’s gotta be something, c’est un peu trop, non? [It’s a bit much, no?] I mean, I know … there’s other really bad stuff happening [around the world], but no one says anything about the other stuff,” she said.

When she noticed an amused reaction from the diplomats in attendance and realized she had been overheard, she said: “The interpreter apologizes.”

The Geneva-based U.N. Watch posted a video of the incident, noting that the U.N. will have issued over 22 condemnations of Israel by the end of the next assembly but only four regarding all other countries combined.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu mentioned the mishap on Sunday at a Cabinet meeting. “I hope nothing happens to the translator as a result, but I can assure her of a job here in the state of Israel should it come to that,” he said.

“Sometimes someone can rip away at the veil of hypocrisy that exists in the ever-present attacks against us, and this interpreter had the courage to do just that.”

Israel’s Foreign Ministry is said to be delighted at the video, which has helped to confirm what it has long been saying about U.N. treatment of Israel.
