Cuomo: Don’t Pay Service to Apply for Tax Break
New Yorkers don’t have to hire a service for the simple process of re-applying this year for the state’s property tax break, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday, expressing his concern that some people are pressuring taxpayers into hiring them to complete the application for the STAR tax exemption. All homeowners have to reapply for the benefit as part of an effort to weed out waste and abuse.
The applications can be done online, by phone or at local assessors’ offices. The process is fast and requires just a few lines to be completed. The deadline is December 31, 2013.
