Tesla Hires Apple Engineer to Develop New Cars

DETROIT (AP) —

Electric car maker Tesla Motors has hired Apple Inc.’s chief Mac engineer to lead new vehicle development.

Doug Field led the development of new products in his five years at Apple, including the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and iMac. Field began his career as an engineer at Ford Motor Co., and also spent nine years at Segway, where he was the vice president of design and engineering.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in a statement that Field’s experience in consumer electronics and automotive engineering makes him an ideal fit. Field will be Tesla’s vice president of vehicle programs, which is a new position.

Tesla currently sells the Model S sedan. It’s developing a small SUV, the Model X, which is due out next year.
