Shock in Wake of Assault on Hagaon Harav Steinman, shlita
According to available information, a reportedly disturbed man entered the home of the Rosh Yeshivah Hagaon Harav Aharon Leib Steinman, shlita, early on Wednesday morning and attempted to attack him.
The man entered the room in the Rosh Yeshivah’s home where he was learning with a chavrusa, and began to shout and threaten. It remains unconfirmed whether the man physically assaulted the elderly Gadol. The chavrusa and another person in the house removed the man from the premises.
The news of the attempted assault left the community in shock and confusion.
Gedolei Yisrael, Roshei Yeshivah, Rabbanim and Dayanim expressed their outrage over the harrowing incident.
The family of the man was reportedly deeply distraught and publicized a letter sorrowfully asking for selichah and mechilah.
Police arrived at the scene immediately and arrested the attacker. His remand was extended by several days in order to complete the investigation. A judge also ordered him to be sent for a psychiatric evaluation.
