Boater Safety Measures at Tappan Zee Bridge

NYACK, N.Y. (AP) -

Lighting will be changed at the Tappan Zee Bridge to make the construction zone safer for boaters, months after two boaters were killed and four injured when their powerboat crashed into a barge.

The navigational lights will be rearranged under the main span of the existing bridge, which links Rockland and Westchester counties. The victims’ families say the barge was not visible in the dark, although the lighting on the barge met federal standards.
