Christie Announces 2 Debate Dates, Buono Objects

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) —

Gov. Chris Christie has agreed to two gubernatorial debate dates, but opponent Barbara Buono objects to debating Christie the night before the special U.S. Senate election.

The Christie camp announced it will debate Buono on Oct. 8 and 15. Buono’s camp is asking that the Oct. 15 debate be moved back a week.

Buono campaign manager Jonathan Ducote tells The Associated Press it’s not in the public’s interest to hold a gubernatorial debate on the eve of the Oct. 16 Senate election. He hopes Christie and debate sponsor Montclair University agree to hold the second debate Oct. 22.

Christie and Buono are required to participate in two debates as a condition of receiving public financing for the election.

The lieutenant governor candidates, who are also required to debate, will face off on Oct. 11.
