Minimum Wage Hike Bad for Business, Owners Say
A majority of New Jersey’s business leaders say a proposal to automatically adjust the minimum wage every year would dissuade businesses from locating here and hurt those already here.
The state Chamber of Commerce tells The Associated Press that seven out of 10 business owners and executives it surveyed say approval of a ballot question raising the wage would hurt the state’s fragile economy.
More than half say their own businesses would be hurt. And eight out of 10 say policy matters should not be inserted into the constitution.
A question on the Nov. 5 ballot asks voters to approve raising the minimum wage to $8.25, from $7.25, and amend the constitution to trigger annual adjustments based on the Consumer Price Index.
Proponents say all employees deserve a living wage.
