Wiesenthal Center Demands Nazi Stand Trial

TEL AVIV (dpa/MCT) —

The Simon Wiesenthal Center called on Germany Friday to prosecute former Danish Nazi Soren Kam for the killing of a journalist 70 years ago.

The 91-year-old Kam is accused of shooting anti-Nazi journalist Carl Henrik Clemmensen near Copenhagen on August 30, 1943.

“The fact that a totally unrepentant Nazi murderer continues to enjoy the protection of the Bavarian justice system makes a mockery of the principle of justice,” Efraim Zuroff, director of the center’s Israel office, wrote in an appeal.

Denmark has repeatedly requested the extradition of Kam, who lives in Bavaria. The Danish-born former Waffen-SS officer was granted West German citizenship in 1956.

In 2007, Germany again refused extradition after a Munich court ruled that Kam’s involvement in the 1943 killing was not murder, but manslaughter and therefore fell under the statute of limitations, which had expired. In April, the Wiesenthal Center listed Kam as its sixth-most-wanted Nazi war criminal.
