JCP&L Partners With Union for Storm Response
New Jersey’s second-largest electric company is the first in the state to partner with a union to aid its response during major outages.
Jersey Central Power and Light will pay International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 102 members to assess damage and protect the public from downed wires. The workers can also hook up generators and repair damaged connections on homes.
They cannot do work on utility poles.
Training will begin in September.
JCP&L says many of the union members live and work in the service area and can be quickly dispatched, giving the utility flexibility with its own workforce.
Local 102 serves customers in Morris, Somerset, Sussex, Hunterdon, Essex, Passaic, Warren and Union counties.
