Defaced Jackie Robinson Statue in NY Is Cleaned
Swastikas and hate speech crawled on a statute of Jackie Robinson and a teammate outside Brooklyn’s minor league baseball stadium have been removed.
New York City Parks Department Commissioner Veronica White said Thursday the statue of Robinson and Pee Wee Reese was power-washed and sand-blasted. She says stenciling of the inscription on the base of the statue will continue Friday.
Also Thursday, Robinson’s wife, Rachel Robinson, said she was saddened by what she called the senseless act of defacing the statute. She said bias crimes have no place in our society.
The graffiti were discovered Wednesday, scrawled on the statue in black marker. Authorities are investigating.
A local news outlet is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
