Seven days after the burning of sifrei Torah at the Shefat Revivim shul in Netanyah, Rabbanim of the city led a levayah for the scrolls and held a solemn gathering on Monday, Erev Rosh Chodesh Elul.

Toward 4 p.m., the large crowd began to recite Tehillim, followed by Selichos. After Yom Kippur Kattan prayers, Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Dovid Lau and Chief Sephardi Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef, along with the Rav of Kiryat Nordau, Harav Yehoshua Dovid Rosenberg and other Rabbanim, addressed the crowd with hespeidim and divrei hisorerus.

Harav Yehoshua Dovid Rosenberg said, “This is certainly not a coincidence,” that this tragedy occurred at this time, on Erev Rosh Chodesh Elul, a time for all of us to examine our deeds and do teshuvah.

Rav Dovid Werner, Chief Rabbi of Chadera and Rav Moshe Deutsch, of Netanyah, also expressed their pain and horror at the burnnig of the sifrei Torah.

Then the procession left, accompanying the remains of the sifrei Torah in earthenware vessels wrapped in a tallisos, to the Netanyah cemetery.
