Subway Tunnel for R Train Shut Down

NEW YORK (AP) —

A subway tunnel that shepherds hundreds of thousands of riders between Brooklyn and Manhattan will be shut down for 14 months because of damage caused by Sandy.

Closure on the R train’s Montague Street tunnel, which is used by an estimated 650,000 straphangers daily, began Friday night to repair damage from when it was submerged by 20 feet of water during the hurricane last October. It was also damaged by corrosive salt water.

The R will run only on weekends over the Manhattan Bridge. Alternative lines for weekdays will not be added.
