State Trooper Dies Two Years After Plane Crash

A New York state trooper died Wednesday from injuries sustained two years ago while aiding victims of a plane crash.

Winston Martindale, Jr. fell on a piece of equipment while responding to the crash of two small planes on May 9, 2011, in Orange County. Despite internal bleeding, Martindale stayed at the scene for six hours. Both pilots died.

Martindale, a seven-year veteran of the state police and an Army Reservist who served in Afghanistan, is survived by his wife, two children and parents.
