Event Honors Man Forced Into Slavery in 1841
The life of a free-born black man who was abducted in New York and spent 12 years in slavery down South was celebrated in the upstate community he called home.
The 15th annual Solomon Northup Day celebration was held Saturday afternoon on the campus of Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs. Organizers say more than 40 of Northup’s descendants were expected to attend.
Northup was an accomplished fiddler in Saratoga in the early 1840s when he was lured into slavery by men offering him a job. He was taken to Louisiana, where he spent the next 12 years as a plantation slave. After he won his freedom, he wrote a book on his experiences, titled “12 Years A Slave.”
