Tragedy in Ashdod: Father Drowns Saving His Sons

YERUSHALAYIM

In a heartbreaking tragedy, Reb Avraham Elimelech, z”l, 45, a father of five and resident of Beit Shemesh, drowned off the Ashdod beach Sunday night while saving his two sons from the water.

At about 9:30 p.m., rescue services were summoned to the beach after a report that a man had disappeared in the water.

After a short search, the father was found, without a pulse or breath. Emergency personnel tried to resuscitate him but with no success.

An initial police investigation showed that the father came to the beach with his two sons, ages 15 and 16. After a few minutes, he lost contact with the boys and went in to try and rescue them.

A Hatzolah paramedic said, “The father went into the water after his sons were swept in. They emerged safe and sound, but the father was found after a search, lifeless.”

According to an eyewitness, the two boys began to call for help and the father ran into the water. He was able to pull them back to a place where they could stand and walk out of the water on their own. Apparently, the effort he had exerted to pull the children out overcame him and he was swept into the sea.
