NYC Elections Board Sued Over Bengali Ballots
A group of South Asian plaintiffs have filed a lawsuit against the New York City Board of Elections over election ballots at Queens polling places not being available in Bengali.
The suit filed Tuesday in federal court in Brooklyn says the board hasn’t met its obligation under the federal Voting Rights Act requiring translated ballots in areas where a specific portion of the population has limited English proficiency.
The elections board says it always intended to meet its obligation and that Bengali ballots are expected to be available in 2013. A larger Bengali turnout would benefit John Liu’s mayoral candidacy. The Asian-born city comptroller has strong support in Queens’s Bengali community.
