Christie: Bill to Move Up Election Won’t Fly
Gov. Chris Christie says proposed legislation to move the November election to mid-October will end up “on the ash heap.”
Sen. Shirley Turner wants to move the Nov. 5 general election to Oct. 16. The Democrat says it would save taxpayers $12 million and avoid having two statewide elections within three weeks.
Christie set Oct. 16 as the date for a special election to determine who will fill Sen. Frank Lautenberg’s U.S. Senate seat for a year. Lautenberg died on Monday.
Critics say the Republican does not want to have his own race overshadowed by a Senate contest likely to feature Democrat Cory Booker of Newark.
Christie said about 3,000 bills are introduced each session and Turner’s bill “is one that will be on the ash heap as well.”
