A wayward cow’s dip in a central New York pond ended with the animal being lassoed by several volunteer “cowboys.”

Police in the town of New Hartford say a farmer was transporting four cows in a trailer when one of them got loose Thursday afternoon along a busy stretch of Route 5 outside Utica.

The cow became agitated and wandered into the shallow pond at Veterans Park.

The farmer, several bystanders and members of a state Department of Transportation crew joined forces in an attempt to corral the cow. Some of the men waded into the water with looped ropes and managed to lasso the animal cowboy-style, but not before a couple of them were knocked over by the cow.

They eventually got the cow back into the trailer.
