New Police Force Officially Takes Over in Camden
In a day of protest and celebration, Camden’s old police force has officially been retired.
Gov. Chris Christie and other dignitaries came to one of the nation’s most impoverished and violent cities on Wednesday to mark the handover of all policing of the city to a new county-run force.
Officials say it can now have significantly more officers than the old force at about the same cost. The main difference is that officers will no longer be paid longevity and shift differentials.
A group of officers from the old city department protested before the ceremony and laid down their police boots.
One was arrested by the new police force.
