Thruway Lighting Upgrade to Cut Electricity Costs
A series of LED lighting upgrades will cut the Thruway Authority’s electric costs by an estimated 20 percent, Governor Cuomo’s office announced on Tuesday. These lighting upgrades will also provide improved visibility, helping to enhance safety on the Thruway and Canal systems.
The Thruway Authority’s annual electric bill is now $2 million. Upgrades are in process or have been completed at nearly 20 toll barriers and plazas.
LED bulbs can last up to a decade and require less energy than high pressure sodium fixtures. The light shines brighter, improving visibility.
After the installation is complete, the savings in energy costs will enable the project to pay for itself in less than two years.
