No Bail for Suspect in Alleged Fla. Terror Plot
There will be no release on bail for a Pakistani-born man accused in Florida along with his brother of plotting to detonate explosives in New York City.
A Miami federal judge denied bail Tuesday for 30-year-old Sheheryar Alam Qazi, saying he is a risk to flee the country. He and his younger brother, 20-year-old Raees Alam Qazi, have been jailed since their November arrests.
The men have pleaded not guilty to attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and conspiring to provide material support to terrorists. Evidence indicates that the younger Qazi was much more active than his brother in an alleged plot to set off bombs in New York, including researching bomb-making techniques on the internet.
Prosecutors say the older Qazi’s financial support made his brother’s planning possible.
