Boro Park ‘Sinkhole’ to Be Repaired

BROOKLYN

Over the past few weeks, a portion of 53rd Street east of 16th Avenue in Boro Park has sunk, due to underground shifts following a water main break, leading many residents to complain to their councilman, David Greenfield.

In the weeks since the break and its repair, the approximately 100-foot by 12-foot area of damaged street has “settled,” causing cracks and sinking of the roadway.

This week, DEP officials informed Greenfield they are working with the DOT to bring the street up to code as soon as the settling process is complete. They gave assurances that the street is not in danger of collapsing and is safe to drive at reasonable speeds.

“I will continue to closely monitor this situation and work with the necessary city agencies until [the street] is fixed to the standard our community deserves,” said Greenfield.
