Greenfield Announces Winners of Citizen-Voted Projects

BROOKLYN

Councilman David Greenfield on Friday announced that five projects totaling $1.1 million will be completed throughout his district as part of the participatory budgeting initiative, which allows citizens to decide which projects they would like funded.

Two hundred thousand dollars will each be given for security cameras in Boro Park and Midwood, pedestrian countdown signals at dangerous intersections in Bensonhurst and Midwood, and resurfacing of streets in Boro Park.

Last week, 1,610 residents took part in the final vote. The projects, which were advertised by the catchy “How Would You Spend A Million Dollars?” were all suggested by local residents.

“This really was democracy at its finest and showed how well government can work when we give the power back to the people of our community,” Greenfield said. The projects will be funded in this year’s budget, which is due to be completed before July 1.
