Schumer: Sandy Repair Costs Should Be Reimbursed

NEW YORK (AP) —

Sen. Charles Schumer says New York City homeowners who spent their own funds to make repairs after Superstorm Sandy should be reimbursed for costs that haven’t been covered by federal emergency aid or insurance.

Schumer sent a letter to Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan on Tuesday, asking that the federal agency review plans from places like New York City that are getting federal disaster recovery money to make sure reimbursement proposals are included.

New York City is getting $1.77 billion in Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery funding and is required to have a plan for how the money will be used.

The city said the public comment period on the plan just closed, and it is considering recommendations for the final plan, including reimbursements.

HUD had no comment.
