Cuomo Bashes U.S. Gun Proposal as Nearly Nothing
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the federal gun control proposal focusing on background checks is better than nothing, but the moment for real action in Washington on gun violence has been lost.
The Democrat tells public radio’s “Capitol Pressroom” on Wednesday that his state legislation passed in January goes well beyond the changes now being considered in Washington.
New York’s law includes an expanded ban on military-style weapons, an added requirement for mental health professionals to report threats, a limit of seven bullets in a magazine, and a tax on bullets. The bill Cuomo rushed into law after closed-door meetings prompted Republican outrage and has been subject to several fixes since it was enacted.
