On my way to shul Shabbos morning, I play a little game. Who will say “Gut Shabbos”? Who will answer “Gut Shabbos”? Who will avert her eyes? I try to say “Gut Shabbos” to all the women I meet. A few girls will say it first. Some women will answer after I greet them. Many look sideways or downward, avoiding eye contact. I feel like asking, “Does it cost money to say ‘Gut Shabbos’?”
When I am walking with my son who has Down syndrome, every man says “Gut Shabbos.”
Some even stop to shake his hand. A few even greet him by name!
