Former NYPD Officer Sentenced to 14 Years for Extortion
A former New York City police officer has been sentenced to more than 14 years in prison for helping an extortion crew shake down Queens business owners.
Former officer Besnik Llakatura was sentenced Tuesday in Brooklyn federal court to 171 months.
The 38-year-old Llakatura pleaded guilty to extortion conspiracy in 2015.
Prosecutors said Llakatura was an active duty officer on Staten Island in 2013 while also acting as a shakedown man.
U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue said Llakatura and his “criminal partners” used intimidation and threats of violence to demand payment from “hardworking citizens who dared to open businesses on their so-called ‘turf.'”
Defense lawyer Eric Franz tells the Daily News that Llakatura will now have to pay “a stiff price for money he sought to collect from a former friend.”
