Hezbollah on High Alert for Israeli Attack

Hezbollah declared a state of emergency on Thursday, apparently prompted by the Juniper Cobra joint U.S.–Israel military maneuvers currently being conducted in Israel.

“Hezbollah declared its ranks in readiness for the past two days, for fear of Israeli aggression on Lebanon,” the London-based Rai Al-Youm newspaper said on Thursday.

“High alert was declared in light of information received that the Israeli army is conducting secret military maneuvers jointly with the United States, which are currently taking place in the country and in the Mediterranean,” the report said.

Citing sources in Hezbollah, the Arabic-language daily alleged that the Pentagon has given the IDF a green light to launch a “quick surprise attack.”

Juniper Cobra is held regularly every two years, and senior IDF officers have issued routine disclaimers that it is targeted against anyone in particular, but that its aim is to increase readiness to repel an attack from “any direction.”
