Cabbie Lay Dead 18 Hours in Parked Taxi

NEW YORK (AP) —

A New York City taxi driver who appeared to be resting was actually dead in his parked vehicle for about 18 hours.

Mehari Bokrezion, 59, died around 12:30 p.m. last Tuesday of cardiovascular disease. He had pulled over in an area where drivers are allowed to rest for an hour and wasn’t found until Wednesday morning.

When he failed to go home, his worried wife and brother traced his GPS device with help from his garage. At around the same time, at 6:30 a.m., a passerby noticed the driver hadn’t moved and called 911.

The Manhattan neighborhood, SoHo, bustles with foot traffic but only one person sought help. Other taxi drivers also came and went without realizing something was wrong.
