Burial Caves Uncovered Near Kever Shimon Hatzadik

YERUSHALAYIM

Kohanim were advised that until further notice they will have to take an alternate route to the area of the kever of Shimon Hatazaddik in Yerushalayim, after Jewish burial caves were discovered during road work, Arutz Sheva reported on Thursday.

Caves containing crypts were found in the course of making improvements in the road leading to the kever, on Derekh Shekhem near the Pierre Van Passan traffic circle in the Wadi Joz neighborhood.

A delegation from the Atra Kadisha group called to the site informed the Moriah company, which is doing the work for the Yerushalayim Municipality, that kohanim will be prohibited from passing through there until a solution is found. In the meantime, they will only be able to reach the area from the northern entrance near Shimon Hatzadik Street and the Central Police Headquarters.

Atra Kadisha turned to Deputy Mayor Yossi Deitch to help find a solution. Deitch toured the area and a number of halachic and engineering ideas were suggested that could be implemented in the near future to enable kohanim to again travel through the area.
