NY Judge Upholds Expansion Project Of Kiryas Joel
A state Supreme Court justice handed a significant victory to Kiryas Joel, rejecting two legal challenges to the village’s planned expansion.
In a decision signed Tuesday, Justice Gretchen Walsh found no grounds to invalidate Kiryas Joel’s annexation of 164 acres from the town of Monroe or an environmental review the village conducted.
The legal challenges were made by Orange County, eight municipalities and the nonprofit Preserve Hudson Valley. Opponents of the annexation fear increased congestion. Supporters said that explosive growth — the village is consistently one of the fastest growing in the country — makes expansion imperative.
The ruling means that Kiryas Joel can begin the long-stalled enlargement, unless the plaintiffs appeal.
