Microsoft to Host Boeing’s Airline Data in the Cloud

Boeing and Microsoft said they’ve agreed to build a cloud-based platform for the commercial aviation applications of the planemaker’s AerData and Jeppesen units, used by more than 300 airlines.

“Boeing’s expertise and extensive aviation data resources coupled with Microsoft’s cloud technology will accelerate innovation in areas such as predictive maintenance and flight optimization, allowing airlines to drive down costs and improve operational efficiency,” said Kevin Crowley, Boeing vice president of Digital Aviation, in a joint statement by the companies.

Boeing said its applications deliver digital navigation information to nearly 13,000 aircraft daily, and help airlines reduce crew scheduling costs and fuel utilization. The applications also track real-time data on more than 3,800 planes around the globe to monitor operational performance, fuel use and maintenance needs.
