NEW YORK (AP) —

NYPD Commissioner William Bratton called it “ironic” Tuesday that some officers assigned to a security detail at Trump Tower are Muslim.

Bratton was talking about building trust in Muslim communities to fight terror. He said Donald Trump’s rhetoric hurts that effort.

Bratton said the 36,000-officer NYPD has roughly 1,000 Muslims, some of whom have been posted outside the midtown Manhattan skyscraper where Trump lives.

In related news, two Republican officials in New Jersey switched political parties over what they said are racist comments made by the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.

Hackensack Mayor John Labrosse and Deputy Mayor Kathleen Canestrino filed to become independents on Thursday, they said in a news release.

“The divisive and racist statements that Trump keeps making are insulting to many of our people and completely unacceptable. We don’t want a young student in one of our schools hearing these things and believing that their own elected officials are supporting these types of statements,” the pair said in a statement.
