Trove of Soggy, Undelivered Mail Found in Washington Sewer

WASHINGTON (AP) —

U.S. Postal Service investigators want to know who left a large trove of undelivered mail inside the catch basins of a sewer in northeastern Washington.

The Washington Post reports that D.C. Water crews used a claw-like tool and pole on Monday and Tuesday to pull the soggy mail out of the two catch basins. The piles of mail were discovered by a resident on Monday.

D.C. Water spokeswoman Pamela Mooring says that the bundles filed 25 trash bags.

Lance Norrington, a spokesman with the U.S. Postal Service’s Office of Inspector General, says the undelivered mail was being sorted through on Wednesday.

The agency apologized for the incident, saying it is working hard to discover how the mail came to be there.
