FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) - Alabama authorities say a Florence police officer has been shot and a suspect has died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.
The Times-Daily of Florence reports that the unidentified officer was shot just after midnight Sunday and was transported to Huntsville Hospital. The officer’s condition was not immediately known.
The shooting happened at Cox Creek Parkway and Cloverdale Road.
Police say that following the shooting, officers spotted the suspect in a vehicle just after 1 a.m. and a short chase ensued. The vehicle stopped at a church parking lot and the driver jumped from the vehicle and ran into a utility trailer. As police approached, the suspect apparently shot himself.
An investigation is ongoing.
