YERUSHALAYIM

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu decided on Wednesday to appoint reserve Brig. Gen. Avriel Bar-Yosef as his national security adviser and as head of the National Security Council. Bar-Yosef replaces Yossi Cohen, who left the NSC two months ago to become head of the Mossad.

From 2009 until a year-and-a-half ago, Bar-Yosef, 61, served as deputy head of the NSC, initially under Uzi Arad, under Yaakov Amidror and finally under Cohen. Between 2004 and 2009, Bar-Yosef was director of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. He served for 25 years in the Israel Defense Forces, where his last army post was as head of the Israel Navy’s equipment division. He has a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Glasgow in Scotland and a Master’s in engineering from the University of Michigan.

Since the departure of Yossi Cohen as head of the National Security Council, reserve Brig. Gen. Jacob Nagel has been acting head of the council. Nagel is expected to return to his prior post of deputy NSC head for security policy.

By law, the prime minister’s national security adviser reports directly to the prime minster and heads the National Security Council.
